Celebrated throughout the Hispanic world, but still almost unknown to English readers, Carlos Martínez Rivas (1924-98) was a passionate and linguistically brilliant Nicaraguan poet who raised a ‘solitary insurrection’ against society’s oppressive orthodoxies and hypocrisies. Wary of success and its baggage, Rivas rarely published his work, with only two collections published in his lifetime.
Roger Hickin lives and writes in New Zealand. His translations of Latin American poets include Like Water for Days of Thirst, Selected Poems of Blanca Castellón (Nicaragua) & Threnody for Joaquín Pasos & Other Poems by Carlos Martínez Rivas, both published in 2016 by Cold Hub Press (New Zealand).
